How To Play Minesweeper

History of Minesweeper

Minesweeper has its origins in the 1960s and 1970s with early mainframe games, but it became widely known when Microsoft included it as part of the Windows operating system in 1990. The game was originally included in Windows 3.1 as a way to help users become familiar with using a mouse, particularly with the concepts of clicking and right-clicking.

The classic Windows version of Minesweeper remained largely unchanged until Windows Vista, when Microsoft updated its appearance. The game continued to be included with Windows until Windows 8, when it was removed as a default program but remained available as a downloadable app.

How to Play Minesweeper

Minesweeper is a single-player puzzle game where the objective is to clear a rectangular board containing hidden mines without detonating any of them. The game is won when all safe squares are revealed and all mines are flagged.

Basic Rules:

  1. Left-click to reveal a square.
  2. Right-click to flag a square you believe contains a mine.
  3. Numbers on revealed squares indicate how many mines are adjacent to that square (including diagonally).
  4. Use these numbers to deduce where mines are located.
  5. If you reveal a square with no adjacent mines, all adjacent squares will automatically be revealed.
  6. If you reveal a mine, the game is over.
